Scientists Say Aquaculture Could Save Bluefin

Thursday, May 01, 2008

SPAIN - The numbers of bluefin tuna in the western Atlantic have plummeted by more than 90 percent since the 1970s, says the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas.

The cause of the decline is overfishing, but scientists hope to redress the trend by learning how to breed these huge fish in captivity, says Mercapesca. The initiative will reduce pressure on wild tuna, although the increasing demand for bluefin sushi is also cause for concern, says the report.

It is likely that tuna will inevitably follow salmon, catfish and other species into commercial aquaculture.
