Mariano Rajoy says he will not resign

The leader of the Partido Popular has said he will present a new team to fight the 2012 elections at a party conference called for June Mariano Rajoy, the leader of the Partido Popular, announced this afternoon that he is not going to resign, despite his second election defeat at the hands of the Socialists last Sunday.There had been considerable speculation as to what he may do, following his lack of any public appearance yesterday, but thsi afternoon he met with the party executive in the party’s headquarters in Calle Génova in Madrid, and announced afterwards that he was staying on as party leader.In addition, Rajoy said he would call a party congress for the month of June where he would present himself and the new team which he considers best suited to face the future and the following elections in 2012.Despite the defeat last Sunday, Mariano Rajoy did achieve five more seats for the conservative opposition, as well as a record number of voters.
