The Regional Government of Murcia is to inject 1000 million euros into the Murcian economy, with a package of 100 projects to energise employment and growth. The President of the Autonomous Community, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, has announced the Plan for Extraordinary Measures for the Dynamisation of Economy and Consolidation of Employment for the Region of Murcia. Despite the gloomy sounding (and very long!) title of the project, Valcárcel insists that there is no need for residents of the area to worry, as Murcia has enjoyed growth for the last 12 years above the national average, however the plan is to make sure that the region can cope with any downwards cycles and 'turbulence' in the economy with confidence and stability.
Of the investment announced, 261 million will be spent this year, on a wide range of projects. Key to the measures is investment in infrastructure, industry, commerce and hotels, agriculture and water, homes and tourism, which accounts for 798 million euros of the total investment. 134 million of this will be spent in 2008.
Further plans are for the motorway from Santomera to San Javier, improvements to road safety barriers, the new international airport, rural development and road improvement and an access plan for the Valle de Escombreras.
An additional 265 million euros is earmarked for the construction of homes under the Viviendas de Protección Official, which will provide 10,000 homes.
In the health sector, the plan for a new hospital for cerebal damage has been awarded 14 million euros, along with a centre for onco-haematology at a cost of 12 million euros.
